What transforms an organized system from one state into another?

The first work of the Structural Atlas examined how organized states persist. The fourth paper in the opening Atlas sequence turns to the complementary question of transformation:

“Transformation Mechanisms Across Scientific Domains: Observations from Phase I of the Structural Atlas”

Across ten scientific domain groups, Phase I revealed six provisional transformation families:

The specific mechanisms differ across physics, biology, ecology, engineering, computation, materials science, evolution, and social systems. Yet they often appear to perform comparable organizational roles.

The paper does not claim that these six families are complete or universal. It establishes a comparative taxonomy for testing that question as the Atlas develops.

One of the most important questions for Phase II is whether particular persistence mechanisms systematically predispose systems toward particular forms of transformation.
